Meet Megan Carter, The Vintage Loving Designer Who Doesn’t Care What You Think

Who are you?

My name is Megan Carter, I am 26 years old born & raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I’m a midwest gal that has had a passion for fashion before I really even knew what fashion was, represented, & felt to the soul. Over the years I have defined myself & come to the conclusion on what fashion means to me & it’s more than a designer name. It is authenticity, flare, & originality with your own style.

What was the first outfit you remember wearing that made you feel fly?

The first outfit I ever wore that made me feel fly was my prom look surprisingly. I wore a shoulder padded, one-shoulder mini dress with a cape attached, a dress by AQ/AQ – a brand on ASOS. It was such a futuristic & sexy dress, from the platform heels to my orchid corsage. I was giving a runway or red carpet look for my fellow classmates. I didn’t want to look like I was going to prom, it needed to be more extravagant. I wanted to look back & be like I loved my prom look. It was like me planning for my wedding lol.

Aside from fashion references, what influences your style?

My influences not only come from fashion, but I would say art – especially Art Deco interior or prints specifically around the 60s-70s era! Interior design that has a vintage bold look is my favorite reference. Culture, black culture to be exact, that’s a whole influence in my everyday. My mother and grandmother are my forever influence on fashion in my life.

What three elements define your look?

Originality: no matter what I have my own style, I think anyone can say that. Vintage: I always like to incorporate some form of an era in my look, I truly believe like I’m supposed to be my age style-wise in another era because it adapts to my personality perfectly.
Sexy: I like to say I always bring the sexy in any look I do. That uplifts my confidence factor & I love it. My motto is: either you love my style or hate it and if you hate it sucks for you!

If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Some form of a vintage jumpsuit, a tight jumpsuit that shows off my body is great. Finished with a skinny heel, bootie or open toe, and a great mini bag!

Which decade was the most stylish? Why?

I would say the best era to me would be the late 60’s to early 70’s. The Austin Powers movies are my favorite eras, everything was silhouetted beautifully, the colors & prints were vibrant and there was character and flare – groovy I would say.

Do you think fast fashion has had a positive or negative effect on people cultivating a personal sense of style?

There are people that are in fashion I consider to be culture vultures. This term I would describe as people who say that have style, but it’s BOUGHT style, culturally appropriated or nonoriginal. Today I think fast fashion is not the new wave I think it’s a negative effect on our youth that believes this the fashions that create an individual style. I think we need more of our youth going to the library & start reading fashion books & old fashion magazines to appreciate FASHION & its history. Not looking to the Kardashian’s for example on styling advice & trying to build off that. Bring some positivity in your life & learn up on your history.
